AcademiaACADEMIA is Shelby County’s academic quiz
competition for grades 9-12. The purpose of Academia is to promote friendly
competition among the local schools in an academic format. There are currently 9
county schools that participate in Academia. The league season consists of 5
weeks of matches. Each match pits 3 schools against one another at 3 different
sites. Questions at each site are identical. Teams score points for each
correct answer given. Rankings are based on how a school finishes at each site.
Ties are broken based on a school’s total points for the year. The winning
school receives a travelling cup to display. Matches are free and open to the
public.
A match
consists of 10 rounds, each dedicated to one of 10 categories. Schools may
switch players during the break between rounds. The categories include:
Literature Geography/World
History Language Current Events Fine Arts Science Math Sports/ Ent. / Leisure
US History/Government General Knowledge
Local
businesses support an Academia Scholarship with generous donations each year,
with one scholarship awarded to each school. Senior members of the Academia
team may apply for this scholarship.
Academia
students interested in attending Edison Community College are also eligible to
compete for a Scholarship sponsored by Edison. One scholarship each year is
awarded to a Shelby Co. Academia alumnus.
Any Russia student
in grades 9-12 is eligible to participate in Academia. Tryouts are held
separately for each category over the course of a couple weeks in September.
Practice materials may be checked out from Mrs. Salisbury. All tryouts will be held in Mrs. Salisbury’s room.
